A name with a longer history

Although bloodmove.com was registered on 2 December 2024, the name BloodMove did not begin with this domain. Its documented story reaches much further back, into South Australia’s public blood-management system and the stubbornly practical question of how to keep donated blood moving safely, efficiently and usefully between hospitals.

Public records trace BloodMove’s operational history to a programme whose results were already being measured in July 2007. Created to support better blood management across regional South Australia, the project connected hospitals, transfusion laboratories and clinical teams across enormous distances. The National Blood Authority later described BloodMove as overseeing 60 regional hospitals supplied through a mixture of regional and metropolitan transfusion services. Its work covered the decidedly unglamorous—but critically important— details of inventory management, cold-chain assurance, emergency supply and the reduction of avoidable waste.

By January 2013, the programme had reduced reported avoidable blood wastage from 15 per cent to less than 1 per cent. BloodMove Platelets subsequently applied the same collaborative instinct to short-life platelet stocks in metropolitan Adelaide: moving near-expiry products from lower-use sites to higher-use hospitals, sharing inventories and making better use of products before they expired.

So, while this address arrived in late 2024, the word BloodMove was hardly waiting around for a domain name to give it purpose. It had already appeared in case studies, conference presentations, research abstracts, government resources and professional discussions about blood stewardship.

How the documented flows appear to work

The Australian BloodMove literature describes a circular, hub-and-spoke logistics model in which supplying transfusion-service laboratories dispatch cross-matched or emergency red cells to regional hospitals, receive unused or approaching-return stock back for potential re-issue, and pass near-expiry stock to larger metropolitan laboratories where transfusion before expiry is more likely. BloodMove Platelets applies the same collaborative pattern to short-life platelet stocks, culminating in a shared Day-5 metropolitan inventory.

The documented process includes supply to regional hospitals, return of unused stock to laboratories, and redistribution of near-expiry products to higher-use sites—movements that could ordinarily be described as outbound and inbound flows, although those terms do not appear in the Australian source material.
